|Build a Model Flatboat|
Boatmen first traveled the Natchez Trace in 1785 after carrying their cargo on large flatboats down the Mississippi River to New Orleans to sell. The flatboats could be as long as 60 feet and had space for an animal stable and storeroom in the rear and a cabin divided into rooms by canvas partitions in the middle. Three men were needed to navigate a flatboat using long paddles attached to either side of the cabin roof and the rear of the boat.
